A Journey to Bulgaria: Capturing the Spirit of the International Rose Festival
It all started with a quest to recreate the perfect rose scent—a journey deeply connected to the International Rose Festival near Plovdiv, Bulgaria. This annual event is more than a celebration of flowers; it’s a tribute to centuries-old traditions that have perfected the art of rose oil distillation. My ex-wife, Katia, who was raised in Bulgaria, grew up participating in this festival, and her childhood memories played a pivotal role in crafting the aromatic blend used in our soap.
The process of distilling rose oil has remained nearly unchanged for generations. Every drop of the oil embodies the beauty of the petals and the care taken during the festival. We wanted to channel that heritage, creating a product that resonates with the same purity and complexity as those original oils.
Blindfolding the Senses to Find the Perfect Rose Oils
Now, we all know what a rose smells like—at least, we think we do. But to capture the true essence of the rose from Katia’s memories, we needed to dig deeper. That’s where things got a little unconventional. In a method that was part science, part art, I blindfolded Katia to focus her attention solely on the aroma.
With her sense of sight removed, she was transported back to the memories of rose festivals past—the parades, the petals, the smells that filled the air. As she connected with those moments, I presented her with several different rose oils—each with subtle differences. At the time, I had five or six oils to choose from, each representing a different aspect of the rose’s scent.
The Blend That Brings Roses to Life
From those options, Katia selected three oils—each offering a unique dimension to the final scent. The result was a beautifully layered blend:
- A green, earthy note, reminiscent of freshly cut rose stems.
- A fresh floral bouquet, as if standing in a garden of roses in full bloom.
- Soft, simple rose notes, bringing balance and harmony to the entire aroma.
This blend captures the true complexity of rose, and it has become the signature scent in one of our soaps. It’s amazing how memory and scent can come together to tell a story through aroma.
Honoring Tradition: Naming the Blend After Family
In honor of Katia’s grandmother, Tzveta, who played a significant role in her upbringing, we named the body butter (and the soap that followed) after her. Tzveta’s influence and care mirrored the attention we put into this vegan bar soap—crafting something that nourishes and delights, while preserving cherished memories.
